Struggling to get motivated at the moment?

Now in full swing of lockdown, days are rolling into each other and there seems to be a momentum or rhythm on how the day is set.

Are your days like this too?

Getting yourself motivated and inspired each day can prove to be the ultimate challenge.

There’s nothing worse than heading to bed each night and going over the things that you didn’t get done and feeling bad for it.

  • An idea that’s running through your mind that you’re keen to pursue but just don’t have the energy or inclination
  • A report that needs to be done for work but you keep putting it off or something else crops up
  • Researching a new job because it’s easier to stay where you are
  • Getting swept up in another activity and pushing what you wanted to do further down the list, because it’s just easier right now

If you’ve been finding it a struggle to get yourself motivated and taking action, please know that you’re not alone.

Unsettling times effect us all in different ways and this is one of the most common situations impacting so many of us right now.

There are going to be days where you’re not going to want to take action and that’s ok.

But if you’re stressed and it’s getting to you every night thinking back on what you didn’t get round to doing.  This can have a bigger impact on your mental wellbeing.

Motivation is a flow; it’s not a switch that you can flick to instantly create motivation.  There’s a driving force behind it.

A purpose of what you want + the action you’re taking to get you there = the feeling of accomplishment when you get there.

What do I mean?

Let’s look at when you wake up in the morning.  You decide you want to feel clean and wear something nice today, it’ll help you to feel good – this is the purpose

Jumping in the shower, then choosing your outfit for the day and getting dressed – this is the action

The result is you’re feeling good; clean and happy.  Mission accomplished.

So, let’s bring it back to your situation right now and apply this to your day and helping you to feel motivated.

Each day ask yourself these 3 questions – if it helps write them down and your answers to keep you focused and on track:-

  1. What do I want today to be about?
  2. What action do I need to take?
  3. How will I feel at the end of the day once I’ve accomplished this?

And there’s your motivation right there.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with everything at the moment and this is a struggle for you, then break it down into bitesize chunks.

Make a list the previous evening of what you’d like to do or need to do the next day.  Focus on how you want to feel; this will keep you motivated and get you through.

Take it a step further and create an affirmation that you can keep repeating to yourself to push you forward.  These can often be quite personal to you and tailored to your task, here are a few of mine to keep me motivated:-

  • You can do this
  • You’re making amazing things happen today
  • You’re a motivational queen today, you’ve got this!

Feel free to use mine or come up with your own affirmations to keep you on track.

Remember to acknowledge your wins; small or big.  Every win counts.  Wins create that spark in us to do more.  So call out yours.

Now, I’d love to hear how you get on with this exercise.

Drop me an email here and let me know how you’re going to turn this insight into action.

What task are you going to apply this to right now to keep you motivated?

Keep going my friend and remember, you’re the creator of how you want to tackle your days and what you want to accomplish.  You’re in control.
